From Lorna Aldridge
Not long after we had moved to our present address, I drew Bob’s attention to an ad in the Somerset Gazette. It was asking if anyone who had a spare room might consider putting up some German visitors who were coming from Königslutter for about 5 days. We duly answered that we had a room and would like to help out and that is how we became involved with the Friends of Königslutter. That was back in the early 1990’s.
Bob was unable to attend one of the AGM’s so I went along alone armed with a notebook and pen to make sure I could tell him everything of importance. Harold Inder, who was a great organiser and general factotum for FoK at that time saw me scribbling away and suggested I should become Secretary. I was so surprised; I didn’t have the wit to say that I was no secretary and had never done anything of that nature before. It was seven years later that I eventually stepped back and asked somebody else to take over the reins. Bob became Treasurer and held the post for five years before illness forced him to hand over the job to Ken Marsh.
We have had some good times with FoK and so enjoyed meeting the lovely people from that town. To be welcomed into their homes and travel through their lovely countryside is a joy. Lasting friendships have been made with many couples throughout the society.
Now everybody is getting older and new blood is needed to keep the link alive and flourishing. I do hope we get some interest and others may forge the friendships we have and discover for themselves what Twinning is all about.
